A Big Change for Norwegian Cruisers

Norwegian Cruise Line is shaking things up again — this time at its private island paradise, Great Stirrup Cay. Starting March 1, 2026, NCL’s popular “More at Sea” drink package will no longer be valid for beverages purchased on the island.

This means that while your drink package still works onboard the ship, it won’t cover your margaritas or piña coladas once you step onto Great Stirrup Cay. Instead, NCL plans to introduce a new, separate island drink package available for purchase.

What’s Changing

Up until now, guests could use their ship drink packages at all bars on Great Stirrup Cay — whether lounging by the beach, swimming, or exploring the island. Under the new policy, that convenience goes away.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

Before March 2026

After March 2026

“More at Sea” drink package works on Great Stirrup Cay

Package valid onboard only

Alcoholic beverages covered

Must purchase separate island drink package

Non-alcoholic drinks (water, iced tea, juice) complimentary

Still complimentary

No additional beverage packages offered

Why the Change?

NCL is in the middle of a major expansion at Great Stirrup Cay — including a new pier, larger pool area, splash zones, and a full waterpark with 19 slides set to open in 2026.

These upgrades are meant to transform the island into more of a “destination” experience rather than just a beach stop. Along with that, NCL seems to be separating onboard and onshore amenities to operate more like a resort, where drinks and extras can be purchased or upgraded separately.

Of course, not everyone is thrilled. Many loyal cruisers have enjoyed the simplicity of using their ship drink package on the island, and this move adds another layer of cost for those who like to sip by the beach.

What It Means for Cruisers

If your upcoming sailing includes Great Stirrup Cay before March 2026, you’re in luck — you’ll still enjoy drinks on the island under your current package. For cruises after that, here’s what to expect:

  • Budget for extra costs if you want alcoholic beverages ashore.

  • Non-alcoholic drinks remain free, so you’ll still have access to water, juice, and iced tea.

  • Island drink package details (pricing and inclusions) are expected to be announced in early 2026.

  • You can always return to the ship if you’d rather enjoy your included drinks there.

How to Make the Most of It

If you’re cruising after the policy change, here are a few ways to still enjoy your day at Great Stirrup Cay without overspending:

  1. Start your day with drinks onboard before heading to the island.

  2. Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated between cocktails.

  3. Watch for bundle deals — NCL may offer a discounted price when booking excursions or cabanas that include drinks.

  4. Decide if the new island package is worth it based on how long you’ll actually spend ashore.

Final Thoughts

While the drink package change might feel like a downgrade, it’s part of a broader refresh for Great Stirrup Cay. The island’s upcoming pier, waterpark, and upgraded lounges promise a more resort-style vibe — even if it comes with new à la carte pricing.

For now, cruisers should plan ahead, stay informed on the new package details when they’re released, and decide what kind of experience fits their vacation style.

If you’re sailing before the cutoff date, raise that piña colada proudly — it might be one of the last “included” ones you’ll enjoy on Great Stirrup Cay.
